After posting a simple collage project on this site over the weekend, I decided to bring in collage materials to a program where I run an open studio group. I brought in a container filled with pre-cut words and another with pre-cut images from magazines. There were also magazines available for the clients to look through. The clients spread the pre-cut collections all over the table and began searching for images and words that caught their attention. They arranged and glued their selections onto the paper very deliberately. As they worked, they began talking about why they selected the images and words that they were placing onto their paper. Most of the images were directly related to their life in some way.
On that day, I was reminded of how useful the use of images and words can be in helping clients in their expression of topics that are important to them and might not otherwise be shared.
