Tunes of The Descendant Vampire Series

I don’t listen to music as I write; I can’t possibly do those two things at the same time. However, as I’m driving or listening to music at home, a song will come on the radio and I’ll be like, “Oh man, that song would be great if my books were ever turned into film.” So I thought it would be fun to compile a list of tunes that I thought represented the stories presented in The Descendant and The Search. Kudos also goes out to my fan club that offered up some suggestions.

Songs for the Overall Series

Sympathy For the Devil by Guns n' Roses

For those who know me, it will come as no surprise that I had to have a Guns N Roses song on this list! They are my absolute favorite band. I know they covered this song, but I much prefer this version to the original. The lyrics scream ‘vampire movie,’ and yes, I know it was used in the film adaption of Interview with the Vampire. I personally find the biblical references in the lyrics a perfect tie-in with the biblical references in my books.

Crawl Back in by Dead by Sunrise

Big shout out to Jennifer in my fan club that recommended this song! This is another that I hadn’t heard of before, but once I read the lyrics, I thought it perfect for my series. I think the lyrics capture Allison’s journey and the decisions that she’s faced with, and the internal conflict that she goes through.

Immortal by Eve to Adam

The title & the band name say it all!

If You're Gong Through Hell by Rodney Atkins

Here’s another song that nicely sums up Allison’s journey – demons, angels, self-doubt.

Songs for The Descendant

Voodoo by Godsmack

If you haven’t read The Descendant, I don’t want to give you any spoilers here. Let’s just say the band’s reference to the snakebite entering the vein is spot on with my tale of how the first vampire was created and fits really well with the scene in Chapter 9.

Alone by Heart

Vincent’s mantra. Enough said.

Songs for The Search

Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones

In Chapter 1 of The Search, you see a very different Allison from where book 1 left off. I thought the tempo of this song flowed quite well with what she’s doing in that opening scene. I could see her walking up the steps with her drunken companion with this song playing in the background, and then a record-scratching sound breaks off the tune when Allison realizes that she and her companion aren’t alone.

The lyrics also give insight into Allison’s frame of mind at the opening of this book. Her heart is black, and she can’t envision that ever changing. Will it change? You’ll have to read the books to find out!

O Fortuna (Carmina Burana) by Carl Orff

I have to admit, when a member of my fan club recommended this song, I had no idea what it was until I listened to it. I guarantee you’ll recognize it once you hear it! This song has been used in many climatic scenes in numerous movies. I could picture this playing in the background during the fight scene on the peak of Rattlesnake Island.

Love Song by Tesla

This is one of my all time favorite songs and it just had to make my list! I could see this song fitting into The Descendant Vampire Series in several spots, but decided that it fits best here. Again, I don’t want to give any spoilers, and those of you who have read the books can hopefully see how this song can apply to Allison and Matt, and Allison and Vincent. Enough said!

Songs for The Truth

Lake of Fire by Nirvana

The Truth, book 3 in The Descendant Vampire Series, isn’t released yet, but I’ll give you a little preview. The book starts with the murder of someone close to Allison. Okay, I know I’ve given you that hint before, so here’s another. If you read the first two books, you know what happens to a person’s soul when they’re transformed into a vampire, and then if the vampire subsequently dies, what happens to them. That’s your hint! I thought the lyrics of this Meat Puppets remake really fit the bill.

Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone) by Cinderella

This is another one of my all time favorite songs. I thought this song fit best in book 3. Here’s one of my favorite lines from The Truth: “With sobriety came clarity and with clarity came reality.” This is another hint, folks! This is a preview of where Allison’s head, heart, and reality are.

Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley

I’m a huge Elvis fan so I had to get one of his songs on my playlist! Suspicious Minds is perfect, but whose mind am I referring to – Matt, Allison, Vincent? You’ll have to wait until book 3 is published to find out!

All I Want Is You by U2

Another fang-tastic recommendation from my fan club.  I can't decide if this sums up Vincent or Allison's feelings best.  So I'll let you decide.
