Students have an opportunity to have a year-long diary with this lesson and also have a portfolio of their writing. Each school month they copy down the month's poem from the book Chicken Soup with Rice by Maurice Sendak and then write one paragraph about what they did that month. This is a good opportunity for teachers to measure growth in a student's writing and spelling.
It is also a nice gift to give the students at the end of the year so they have an account of what they did each month that year! You could also modify it by finding other poems about that month from other poets, or having students write what they did that month in poetry format!
Then have students draw a picture of what they wrote about in their writing.
