Classmate Cards for Depression

Objective:  To help kids realize they are not alone when feeling depressed.

Materials: index card, crayons, colored pencils, and markers; any decorative materials

The project is a follow-up to a unit on depression or when a child has a suicide attempt.

Each child in the class gets an index card that they decorate with positive words and symbols. Once the card is completed the child can hold onto it for future reflection when they are feeling sad or the card can be given to a classmate who is feeling sad.

After the cards are completed, the kids talk among themselves about the cards and their feelings. Usually the kids are broken into small groups of 3 or 4.
