Materials: One copy of "The First Day of School" per student, Pencils
Description: I adapted "The Night Before Christmas" to use it as a Reader's Theater activity in my Advanced Drama class the first week of school. Through it I:
1. Group students so they can become familiar with each other
2. Assess what basic performing elements they remember from the year before (i.e. Projection, Enunciation, Body Language, Facial Expressions, etc.).
Groups are assigned an allotted amount of the poem to rehearse and perform. Students do not have to memorize their portion, but they do need to focus on delivering their section with animated voices and facial expressions. As a challenge, some groups/ classes may want to add pantomime to their section to enhance the story.
